Pilling on Upholstery Fabric: Why It Happens
What pilling really is, why it can appear even with good abrasion values, and what maintenance steps reduce visible fiber balling.
Pilling is the formation of small fiber balls from short loose fibers twisted by friction. It differs from directional pile marks on velour-type surfaces.
Why abrasion score does not eliminate pilling
Martindale and related tests assess selected wear modes in controlled setups. Real-life friction from jeans seams, hooks, or accessories can be more localized and severe.
Practical approach
Use gentle vacuuming, avoid aggressive scrubbing, and match fabric choice to usage intensity. Do not pull pills by force, as this may damage structural yarns.
