Waterproof Finishing: Fabric Coating and Apretura Process
How upholstery waterproof or hydrophobic finishing is applied in industry: preparation, chemistry application, curing, and quality control.
In furniture language, waterproof often means strongly reduced absorption rather than absolute liquid blocking. The effect is usually achieved through finishing chemistry integrated into textile processing.
Raw material preparation
Before finishing, the textile must be clean and absorbent in a controlled way. Residual oils and earlier processing chemicals are removed to ensure even uptake of functional finishing compounds.
Application of finishing chemistry
Common methods include padding through controlled bath and squeeze rollers, sometimes supported by spray or coating transfer. Formulation choice depends on desired repellency, cleaning behavior, and compliance constraints.
Curing and heat setting
Many finishes need thermal activation in stenter or similar equipment. Time and temperature must match fiber composition to anchor chemistry without damaging shade or handle.
Quality control
Accepted production includes droplet and performance checks, sometimes after repeated cleaning or abrasion cycles. Only approved lots move to finished-goods release.
What this means for the buyer
Hydrophobic finishing is an engineered production stage, not a universal permanent shield. Home care outside guidance can reduce performance faster than normal seating wear.
